    Critical Thinking Skills for Decision Making

    Course Objective:

    On completing this course, learners will be able to think critically, evaluate arguments and evidence objectively, and make sound, well-reasoned decisions in complex situations. They will also learn to identify biases, solve problems effectively, and communicate their reasoning clearly and persuasively.

    Course Outline:

    Modules:

    • Module 1: Introduction to Critical Thinking — What critical thinking is, characteristics of critical thinkers, how critical and creative thinking complement each other, and common barriers; quick “fact vs opinion” judgement activity.

    • Module 2: Analysing Information & Evaluating Arguments — Argument structure, deductive vs inductive reasoning, spotting fallacies, and evaluating evidence quality.

    • Module 3: Biases, Heuristics & Better Judgement — Key cognitive biases, analysis-paralysis, intuition vs analysis, and practical debiasing strategies.

    • Module 4: Decision-Making in Complex Situations — Context diagnosis and response strategies; decision trees, decision matrix, risk assessment, rational decision model & limits; strategies for uncertain decisions.

    • Module 5: Communication & Collaboration — Group decision dynamics, avoiding groupthink, decision methods, and making thinking visible.

    Suitable for professionals at various levels (Managers, Leaders, and Project Managers) as well as individuals seeking personal or professional development in decision-making.

    Entry Requirements:

    Participants are assumed to:

    • Have basic workplace experience and familiarity with day-to-day decision contexts and teamwork;
    • Be able to listen, read and write English at a proficiency equivalent to Workplace Literacy (WPL) Level 6 (‘O’ Levels) and above; and
    • Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to Workplace Numeracy (WPN) Level 6 (‘O’ Levels) and above.

    Essential Requirement:

    Participants are required to bring writing materials.

    Training Medium:

    This course is conducted in English.

    Training Methodology:

    This course is delivered through lectures, facilitated discussions, group activities and demonstrations.

    Activities & Case Work:

    • Group practice on a workplace scenario
    • Bias exercises
    • Case discussions
    • Action planning to apply tools back at work

    Assessment Methodology:

    An individual case study and a multiple-choice question (MCQ) quiz are conducted at the end of the course.

    Certification:

    A Certificate of Proficiency will be awarded to trainees upon completing and passing the assessment. Otherwise, a Certificate of Participation will be issued to those who attained a minimum attendance of 75%.
